Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is the country's most important industrial center. Located in the center-east of the Greater Tunis region and opening out onto the Mediterranean sea, the governorate has a Mediterranean climate and an annual rainfall of up to 470mm. The Port of Tunis, Tunisia is located on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. Situated in the southwest corner of the Gulf of Tunis, the Port of Tunis is divided into two separate, distinct parts.

The bustle of Tunisia's lively capital Tunis reflects an intriguing fusion of two cultures. It's a city where 19th century French boulevards and cosmopolitan western-style shops and entertainments rub shoulders with Arab tradition - at its most exotic in the maze-like 13th century Medina of Moorish houses and souks that is amongst the best preserved of its kind in the Islamic world. Nearby are the poignant ruins of Carthage, the Phoenician city rebuilt by Julius Caesar and Augustus to become the third largest city of the Roman Empire.

Tunis offers all possible connections with either train, buses, shared taxis to other destinations in Tunisia. But Tunis offer one challenge for people in a hurry: It does take a bit of time to get through the town, and if you're changing transport (which is most likely if you're just passing through Tunis) expect that you will have to take the tram or a taxi to get from one station to another. There are numerous stations for shared taxis and buses - each serving its part of the country.

A car and passenger ferry operates daily between Marseille and Tunis port. The ferry sailing to Tunis is operated by SNCM (Societe Nationale Maritime Corse Mediterranee). The crossing takes 24 hours and tickets should be booked well in advance if you are travelling to Tunis during the summer.
